Client Services Job Requirements
By default, most firms expect you to have at least a bachelor's degree. If it's in business or finance, that's extremely helpful. However, it's not necessary. I work in a small RIA, which is a registered investment advisor. So it's a little more who you know, as opposed to with some of the larger firms. Written and oral communication skills are very important because you will be communicating with your clients. You're going to have to do it in a very professional manner, sometimes above what normal communication is with your other friends and colleagues. Having a customer service background is going to be extremely important. And that can be anything that doesn't necessarily have to be in banking.
My Early Career
I was a teller to start my career, and that is where I learned a lot of client engagement and was able to really hone in on my oral and communication skills to really help with being able to handle all sorts of difficult situations.
Why I choose Client Services in Investment Banking
I chose this job after working years in retail banking and understanding basic banking concepts. I became more and more fascinated with investment and wealth building. And I really want to understand how clients manage their wealth and how firms manage their clients' wealth. I got a job offer to be a client services representative at this investment management firm and I jumped at it because I wanted the investment management experience because I felt that was where the growth was in my career. I am every year learning something new and loving every single second of it.
