A background in digital marketing, content creation, or media studies can be particularly beneficial especially if you want to grow your career within the field or work for a larger company.
- Develop strong writing, editing, and communication skills. Content roles are responsible for creating and overseeing content, so having excellent written and verbal communication skills is essential. Familiarize yourself with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla, as well as other tools and software used for content creation, scheduling, and analytics.
- Create a portfolio showcasing your writing samples, content projects, and any relevant experience or achievements. Include a variety of content types, such as blog posts, articles, social media posts, email campaigns, and website copy. Highlight your contributions to each project, including your role, the goals of the project, and the results achieved. If you haven’t had a formal or professional opportunity, build your portfolio with examples of each of these types of output that you would suggest an existing campaign, website or company would find valuable (show them what you can do when you are given the chance)
- Start by gaining experience in content creation, copywriting, or digital marketing roles. Look for internships, entry-level positions. Freelance opportunities may be your best chance to start out to build out your portfolio and gain practical experience. Seek opportunities to work on diverse projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams to gain a broad understanding of content management and digital marketing strategies.
