Steps to take to start your career as a Business Development Consultant and other jobs like it
- Get out there and connect! Business development and sales related roles leverage your skill to be able to connect with people. There is also usually an opportunity to leverage your personal network to help you succeed. Get started on this now, build your network, talk to people, get comfortable engaging strangers. Join LinkedIn groups, interact with posts, and connect with professionals at companies or in roles you admire. Finding a mentor in sales or business development can also help guide your career.
- A bachelor’s degree will open more potential roles as you look to get a start in this field and help with advancement later on. A degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, or Sales Management can give you a solid understanding of business strategies and market trends. Classes in sales techniques, market research, and business operations are especially helpful. If a full degree isn’t your thing, certifications in sales or business development can offer targeted knowledge and practical skills in a shorter time.
- If you’re having trouble landing a business development role specifically, start with entry-level roles within customer service or retail industries. Roles such as sales development representative (SDR) or customer service associate are also great places to start. These roles let you learn the ropes of client interaction and sales processes. Internships in industries you’re passionate about can also give you valuable hands-on experience.
- While working in sales roles, focus on building client relationships, spotting new market opportunities, managing sales pipelines, and generating leads. Hone essential skills like communication and negotiation to earn trust and close deals. Learn to navigate CRM platforms and sales tools, and develop problem-solving skills to address client needs and uncover opportunities.
Who This Role is Good For
My name is Luna, and I currently work in business development at a large tech company here in San Francisco. I really enjoy my job.
There are a lot of different companies in tech and various spaces looking to build out their sales development and business development roles. It's a great role, I think, for those just out of college or a year or two into their career.
Skills for the Role
If you're interested in sales development, you should enjoy talking to customers. A large part of my job involves being on the phone and making cold calls. I make around 50 calls a day, mostly to strangers.
Business Development Pros
There are some huge pros to working in such a cool, large organization. We get to collaborate, share what's working, and exchange ideas. I feel like I'm constantly learning in this role, which is one of the things I love most about it. Whether it's learning about new products or improving my outreach strategies, it's been incredibly fulfilling.
