An anesthesiologist (also called anesthesiologist or anesthetist) is a physician who administers anesthetics prior to, during, or after surgery or other medical procedures. The core element of the specialty is the study and use of anesthesia and anesthetics to safely support a patient's vital functions through the perioperative period.

Steps to take to start your career as an Anesthesiologist and other jobs like it

  • Begin by earning a bachelor's degree with a high GPA that covers pre-med coursework. This is easiest to do in a science-related field like biology or chemistry but possible in others as well.
  • Apply to and attend a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The application process is extensive and likely requires completing standardized testing, in person interviews, and personal recommendations.
  • This typically takes four years to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. After completion you will need to decide your area of specialization.
  • Residency programs provide specialized training and hands-on experience in a particular field of medicine, and allows doctors to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to practice in their chosen specialty.
  • You will need to obtain a medical license by passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or similar exams.
