After medical school, I did an anesthesiology residency, which was an additional four years. </p><h2>Tips For Your First Years of Work Experience (Post Residency):</h2><p>Your first multiple years of training, or work after training, be in a challenging environment (so basically hospital work or academics). </p><h2>Avoid This Mistake:</h2><p>People coming out of training try to find a cush job in medicine or a job where they don't have to take call, which tend to be outpatient jobs in medicine, not hospital based. And I think this can be a mistake because those are the years of high learning and there's nothing like experience.</p><h2>Reproductive Health Clinic:</h2><p>I'm the anesthesiologist at our reproductive health clinic, putting people to sleep primarily for egg retrievals and other reproductive surgeries that they need.</p><h2>Career Concerns:</h2><p>Couple concerns I do have about my job is I have a contract with the facility and it's a contract to provide all the anesthesia services that they need. So I'm 100% responsible 365 days a year. I have a group of people that can back me up and I can try to get days off to go on vacation or a weekend off to go out of town, but if nobody can cover for me, then I can't. So this is quite a big responsibility. </p><h2>Career Pros:</h2><p>I'm really happy at my job. I love the people I work with. Now I get to help young healthy people have babies, which is really rewarding.</p>

<p dir="ltr">After making very little money and having a lot of education, I decided to go back to school and I went back and got an MBA. When I got an MBA, I went into sales in Wall Street and that began my career in high tech.</p>

I worked on Wall Street for four years in my 20s, then got promoted to come out to California to work at the headquarters in corporate strategy for several years. <h2>Why I Chose Entertainment Law</h2><p>Why did I pick entertainment law? Well, you have to have a real love for entertainment and want it to be in movies, TVs, and anything involved with that. Which is, as much fun as it sounds, it's a lot of work. It's a lot of business decisions; it's a lot of legal. But it's fun when you get involved in it. You get to see how the sausage is made.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Pros and Cons of an Entertainment Law Attorney</h2><p>The pros: you get to work on fun projects. You get to see something from a script to a studio, to actually being on screen or a TV show, whichever version. The cons: sometimes you have fire drills and you're gonna work long hours to get something done. You need something over the finish line—financing, whatever it may be, things happen. It's like any other industry, business. You're gonna have to put out fires sometimes.</p><p>The cons are you might have to work long hours. It's not the end of the world, but the pros are you get to work in a pretty cool industry and see some fun things. Attorneys do make decent money. It takes a while to work up to that. And the reason attorneys make decent money sometimes is because of our law school debts. But usually, anytime you're probably looking around six figures, and that can vary and go up depending on your background, education, and years of experience. Like any job, it really does depend. But usually, you're looking to start&nbsp;</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Job Requirements</h2><p>You need to go to law school. That's kind of the requirement for most legal jobs. You can work as a paralegal or in other situations in legal, but to be an actual entertainment attorney, you have to go to law school and then work your way either through a law firm or go in-house with a studio or production company and really get experience. And that's how you kind of get into entertainment law.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Paths into Entertainment Law</h2><p>There's a couple of paths a lot of people take. They work for law firms; they did that for a few years and then switch over to the studio side or production house. Or you can go in-house straight out of law school. It's a little harder to do that. And for anyone thinking they're gonna jump straight into being an attorney out of law school for in-house studios... probably not gonna happen unless you're one of the top tier schools. You're gonna have to work your way up.</p><p>You start as an assistant, coordinator, or paralegal, and you eventually will, if you start in-house. If you want to do the law firm route, you can work that for a few years. And that's usually the path a lot of people take. They'll work at a law firm for five to ten years and then switch over to in-house at a studio or production house.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>The Career Path I Took</h2><p>My personal path was I worked at a law firm, decided if I wanted to become an attorney, went to law school, and then really worked the internships. That's my personal path. A lot of people take different ones. They'll do the law firm side of the internships in the studios. But I did in-house right away and just got internships. Internships are key. They give you great experience and get you in the door, which is really one of the hardest things in the entertainment industry: getting your foot in that door.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Things to Consider</h2><p>First, really ask yourself if you want to be an attorney—that's the first question. If you're on the fence about it, then don't do it. Law school is expensive, it's hard, and it's not easy to pass the bar. If you do want to do that, go to law school or become a paralegal and get internships. Get your foot in the door. You don't always have to start up in the legal side.</p><p>I have a lot of friends and people who start as assistants and work their way up through the studio system or law firm system. It's long, it takes a lot of perseverance, and you really just want to try and get your foot in the door. That's my biggest recommendation. Do whatever you can to get your foot in that door and then see what you want to do from there and work your way up.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Career Advice - Network</h2><p>Network. Networking is a big thing in the entertainment industry. Not a lot of people like it. I'm not a fan of it. I'm not great at it, but it really is the key. Network and get your foot in the door for internships and find connections. That's my biggest recommendation.</p><p><br></p><h2><br></h2>

<h2>How I Got Into Marketing</h2><p>I've been in marketing probably about 15, 20 years. And I always knew I wanted to go into marketing and advertising. I'd seen a show that had a woman who was a successful ad exec. And I just thought it was so cool how she was able to come up with these campaigns and these creative ideas. And there's always something new that she was working on. So that was kind of I guess, my initial inspiration. And because I knew I always wanted to go into marketing at a young age, I chose a college that had a good program for that. So I majored in communications and I minored in marketing.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Tips for Getting Started in Marketing</h2><p>One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you is as soon as you start college—I mean, if you can do it while you're taking classes, great. If not, load up on internships during the summer. That's just the best way to get kind of real-world experience and figure out which area in marketing or which topic of whatever you're looking at, you want to go in further.</p><p>I had an internship in sports marketing, which I thought would be really cool. Then I realized, hey, that's not really what I want to do. But yeah, had multiple internships and learned a ton that way. Also started to create my network, and creating your network in marketing or sales or a lot of different professions is really important as soon as you start. And so people you meet, even in early parts of your career, can still be ones that stay with you for a long time, either just people that you can bounce ideas off of or you can ask when you're looking for a new job, that kind of stuff.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Working at an Agency</h2><p>One of my internships turned into a full-time job when I graduated, and it was at an ad agency. If you can, working in an agency where you can, whether it's a consulting agency, an advertising agency, anything like that, where you have access to a lot of different markets and types of customers and companies is really valuable at a young age. You typically work really hard at agencies when it's time for, you're launching a campaign or about to launch a new project or something. I mean, the hours get pretty grueling, can work on weekends and late into the nights to get things done, but it's also pretty glamorous. You get to do some cool stuff.</p><p>So I got to work with spirits and beverages, consumer goods, technology, nonprofits, when I was there for about six years, and that was really cool.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Working In House</h2><p>I realized that I really liked technology. So when I was ready to make a change, I went in-house, meaning I went to work for a marketing team that was inside the company. And while that marketing team will still use different agencies or partners for certain things, you're the one, really the expert on the company, the product, the business, to build some things on your own as well.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>What Marketing is Like</h2><p>Typically it's a 40, maybe 50-hour week, it's Monday through Friday most of the time, but when you're in marketing, you also get to go see the customers sometimes. And especially if you're in events marketing or communications or products, you often support trade shows and conferences and things like that. So I've been pretty lucky. I mean, those can be long nights. I mean, super fun stuff. You get to go travel different places and typically fun events you're putting on, things you might not have access to on your own budget, but you do to get in front of customers, to build relationships and that kind of stuff.</p><p>So I've gotten to go to several different countries, lots of different states, and yeah, I've really had some fun times, but you put in the work and that's important. And if you want to move up, you've got to keep learning, keep doing what needs to get done. People aren't gonna just see that you clocked in and clocked out. They want to see that you've got the job done. So you do what it takes to get the job done.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Key Marketing Skills</h2><p>In marketing, it's changing a lot. I mean, everybody hears about AI, generative AI. And so there's some roles and some things that are gonna change and get a lot easier to turn things around and create content, but you want to make sure that we're creating good content. And in marketing, you have to be really passionate about the customer and always thinking about from the customer's point of view.</p><p>So whether you're doing customer marketing and trying to cross-sell or upsell to other products or capabilities, or you're doing events marketing or product marketing or whatever, you really need to understand what is that customer thinking throughout that process. And so getting that information from your peers, working with your team to create that customer point of view and understanding how they feel across the customer journey is really key part.</p><p>And then figuring out how to use the latest tools, whether that's AI or different data that you can get and triangulate, that's kind of one of the key things in marketing, understanding your customer and knowing how to use data and using that data to track back and kind of inform what you're gonna do next and validate what you've been doing is actually working. So you can't be successful in marketing unless you know how to use data to validate for sure.</p><p>There's a lot of paths you can take when you're in one type of department within marketing. Doesn't mean you have to stay there. You can always go into other parts. So be curious, ask questions, work your network, and you'll have a fun, long career.</p><p><br></p>
